Wes Brown is an experienced defender on the books of Manchester United. A no-nonsense, courageous centre-back, he has overcome a number of unfortunate injuries to play a vital part in the club's successes over the past decade. Born and bred in Manchester and a boyhood United fan, Wes joined the Reds' Academy at the age of 12 and was a stand-out at youth level, twice winning the club's Young Player of the Year award before being handed a debut in 1998. His first full season saw him make 21 appearances in the Red Devils' famous treble-winning campaign. While injuries dogged Wes over the next few years, his determination to return to fitness kept him foremost in Sir Alex Ferguson's plans, his tough-tackling, committed attitude and defensive instincts leading the United boss to hail him as "the most natural defender in the country". His versatility has also been a terrific asset, with perhaps his best season for the Reds coming in 2007-08, when he played almost exclusively at right back en route to the Premiership and Champions League double. Wes received his first full England cap at the age of 19 and made 23 appearances before his retirement from international football in August 2011. Wes moved on from Old Trafford in the 2011 close season, signing for Sunderland.
