Matthew Bates is a defensive minded player who was in his seventh year as a professional at Middlesbrough in 2010-11. Matthew was part of Boro's FA Youth Cup winning side in 2004, but has endured more than his fair share of bad luck since. Injuries have blighted his career, but he has shown great strength to return on each occasion. Matthew played a battling role in the centre of midfield in the 2008-09 season and scored his first goal for Boro in a 2-0 win against Liverpool. Injury prevented him from appearing in the Championship in 2009-10, but after specialist advice, Matthew returned in the summer of 2010 and was among the leading appearance makers in 2010-11 as he was restored to the centre-back role under new manager Tony Mowbray.
